The 1854 field sketch maps of Nienadowa, Galicia (now Poland) consist of 19 individual maps, 10 of which were copied as part of the Gesher Galicia Cadastral Map and Landowner Records Inventory.

I received copies of these maps in August and have spent the past couple of weeks digitizing and reassembling the maps. The original maps were copied onto A3 paper, and most of the maps were copied in two or three sections. Unfortunately, some of the maps were copied at 90% scale and others were copied at 100% scale. I attempted to digitize these maps so that the original tiff images are all at the same scale, recombined the multiple sections when necessary, and then made an effort to clean up the maps.

The ten maps that were copied fit together as shown below:

Nienadowa Field Sketch Maps - 1854

Digital images of the individual maps can be found as the following blog entries:

Map 9

Map 10

Map 11

Map 12

Map 13

Map 14

Map 16

Map 17

Map 18

Map 19

I was told that the remaining maps (Maps 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 15) had no houses on them and, therefore, were not copied. I am certain that at least some of the remaining maps do, indeed, have houses on them.

In fact, the house of my third great grandfather, Wojciech Dańko, is probably on Map 15. His land extends from Map 10, through Map 15, and into Map 17.

The land held by another third great grandfather, Wojciech Sowa, appears on Map 18.

My next task will be to index these maps in order to begin a one-village study of Nienadowa.

In looking over the 1854 field sketches of Nienadowa, I found Wawrzyniec Trupiło, or rather I found two men named Wawrzyniec Trupiło, one named the elder and one named the younger.

Nienadowa, Galicia - 1854 (Map 19)

Click on the map above to view an enlarged image.

I believe that Wawrzyniec Trupiło the elder is the father-in-law of Katarzyna Dańko, about whom I have written before. Wawrzyniec Trupiło’s land is very close to those of Count Eustachy Dembiński, a wealthy noble whose family owned Nienadowa. Eustachy Dembinski lived in house number 1. His lands occupy most of this map.

The surnames on this map which are also in my family tree include:

Wawrzyniec Trupiło in house number 16 (my probable second cousin twice removed, Katarzyna Dańko, married Wawrzyniec’s son Jan Trupiło).

Jan Bębenek in house number 24 (my first cousin, three times removed, Zofia Dańko, married Antoni Bębenek).

Wawrzyniec Bębenek in house number 28 (my first cousin, three times removed, Zofia Dańko, married Antoni Bębenek).

Jan Jach in house number 29 (my third great grandfather is Wojciech Jach).

Jan Pilch in house number 166 (the midwife who delivered my grandfather and several other relatives was Agnieszka Pilch).

In addition to learning where everyone in Nienadowa resided, these maps may actually be able to help me reconstruct some family lines. I really have to study these maps in detail.

I am a participant in the Gesher Galicia Cadastral Map and Landowner Records Project. This project was initiated in the Spring of 2007 to obtain cadastral maps and landowner records from the Lviv Historical Archives.

In the Fall of 2008, Brian Lenius obtained ten maps for Nienadowa, the village in Galicia where my Danko ancestors lived. These maps were prepared in 1854 and are at a scale of 1:2880. Even though Nienadowa is located within the present borders of Poland, these maps were found in the Ukraine archives.

Last weekend, while I was at the Summer Seminar of the Polish Genealogical Society of California, Pamela Weisberger gave me the maps of Nienadowa that Brian Lenius obtained in Lviv.

Nienadowa, Galicia - 1854 (Map 10)

SOURCE: “Map of the Village of Nienadowa, Galicia – 1854 (Map 10).” Published 1854. Feldskizzen (Field Sketches), Fond 186, Opys 9, Sprava 611. State Historical Archives of Ukraine in Lviv, Lviv, Ukraine.

Click on the map above to enlarge it. This map includes parcels of land (which I have shaded in grey) that belonged to my third great grandfather, Wojciech Dańko. The number 140 indicates the house number to which the parcels belong. Unfortunately, the house itself is not on this map or any of the other maps that Brian Lenius brought back from Lviv. Nine other maps exist for this collection of maps for Nienadowa, and I expect that house number 140 appears on one of the maps that Brian has not yet copied.

From parish records, I know that seven children of my third great grandfather Wojciech Dańko were born in house number 140 in the years 1816, 1819, 1822, 1824, 1827, 1830, and 1833. Since Wojciech was living in the same house to which the parcels on this map belonged in 1854, I can conclude that Wojciech Dańko resided in house number 140 from at least 1816-1854.

Furthermore, the first child of my second great grandfather, Pawel Dańko, was born in this same house in 1826.

In addition to my third great grandfather, I have seen many other ancestral names on these maps. I will have to look at these maps in more detail and try to find other ancestors.
