There appeared Antoni Chotkowski, age forty-two, and Wojciech Smolenski age forty-six, both farmers residing in Borze-marcisze, and stating that two days ago at the hour of six in the evening, Antonina Bórska died, an unmarried woman, residing with her sister, fifty-seven years of age, daughter of the deceased married couple Stefan and Marianna Bórski. After visual evidence of the death of Antonina Bórska, this document was read aloud to the declarants and by Us alone signed because the declarants do not know how to write.

Milewo Malonki

In the year 1814, on the 23rd of September, the noble Wojciech Milewski, age 70, a married man, who died of old age three days ago at the hour of 4 in the afternoon, was armed with the Sacraments and buried in the cemetery.

Wojciech’s age at death provides an approximate year of birth: 1814 - 70 = 1744.

Wojciech is referred to as “uxoratus” which I have translated as “married man”. The same priest used the Latin word “maritus” when referring to other deceased men, and I am not certain what the difference between “uxoratus” and “maritus” is.

On the 31st of March, I Pawel Zakrzewski PCK. baptized an infant with the name Julianna, born on the evening of the 29th, daughter of Wojciech Milewski and Anna, legally married. The Godparents were Andrzej Nejman and Rozalia Milewska from Maląki.

As with many of the church records from this time period in Poland, the researcher must examine preceding records to discover that the child was baptized in 1788 since the year is not expressly stated in the document.

Julianna was born between the first (1772) and second (1793) partitions of Poland. The area in which she was born remained in the Polish-Lithuania Commonwealth until the third partition in 1795.

On the 27th of January, I named above baptized an infant with the name Tekla born on the 26th of this same month, daughter of the nobles Wojciech Milewski and Anna, legally married. The Godparents were the noble Błażej Chełchowski and the noble Bogumiła Milewska, both from Maląki.

As with many of the church records from this time period in Poland, the researcher must examine preceding records to discover that the child was baptized in 1791 by L. Rygalski, V.E.K., since the year and the name of the priest are not expressly stated in the document. The V.E.K. following the priest’s name stands for “Vicarius ecclesiae Karniewis” meaning “Vicar of the Church in Karniewo”.

Tekla was born between the first (1772) and second (1793) partitions of Poland. The area in which she was born remained in the Polish-Lithuania Commonwealth until the third partition in 1795.

Although the priest wrote the name of the village where Telka was born as “Maląki”, most documents spell the name as “Malonki”. In any case, both spellings are pronounced in the same way. In the Słownik Geograficzny Królestwa Polskiego, the village was listed as Milewo-malonki.

In 1801, when Katarzyna was born, this area of Poland was under the control of the Kingdom of Prussia and the province in which Milewo-malonki and Karniewo was located was called New East Prussia. Control of this area by Prussia was short-lived. On 07 Jun 1807, as a result of the Napoleonic Wars, the area was incorporated into the Duchy of Warsaw, controlled by France.
