34.  [Mosaki]-Rukle. This happened in the village of Krasne on the twenty-fifth day of March / sixth day of April in the year one-thousand eight-hundred fifty-one at the hour of twelve noon.‡ There appeared Aleksander Chodkowski, a farmer residing in the village of [Mosaki]-Rukle, thirty years of age, in the presence of Błażej Chodkowski, forty-one years of age, and Leon Chodkowski, thirty-five years of age, both farmers residing in [Mosaki]-Rukle, and he showed Us a child of the male sex born the day before yesterday at the hour of eleven at night of his wife Katarzyna née Mossakowska, thirty-five years of age. To this child at Holy Baptism performed today was given the name Teodor and his Godparents were the afore-mentioned Błażej Chodkowski and his wife Agnieszka. This document was read aloud to the declarant and witnesses who do not know how to write. ‡ [one word?] underline [unknown?]
[signed] The Reverend Józef Bońkowski, Pastor of the Parish of Krasne

Teodor Chodkowski was my 2nd cousin 4X removed.

The priest underlined the hour that the birth was reported and then made a note at the bottom of the record. I could not read the beginning and end of this note, but the middle word was “underline”. Whatever the note says, it apparently explains why the hour the birth was reported is underlined in the record.

Final Sights in Amsterdam

The houses in Amsterdam are built on pilings and, because the piling settle, the houses shift with time. As a result, all the older buildings are a bit crooked. How the windows and doors in some of these houses can continue to operate in the crooked walls is beyond me. The Sint Nicolaaskerk is a Roman Catholic church in Amsterdam, built in Neo-Baroque and Neo-Renaissance styles. At the front of the church are two neo-Baroque towers with a rose window between them. The Hotel Di-Ann is an impressive structure composed of five buildings between the Herengracht and Keizersgracht canals.

And so, my European vacation came to an end. I walked the short distance from my hotel to the train station, took the train to the airport and headed back to San Francisco.
