3 Klonowo

In the year 1793 on the 15th of February, I Błażej Miżyński, Vicar of Pałucki, baptized a female by the name of
Julianna, daughter of the noble Andrzej and Kunegunda née Milewska Niedziałkowski, a legally married couple. The Godparents were the Generous Mateusz Pajewski and the Generous Zofia Bartułkowa.

Many of the records from Klonowo refer to the participants as “nblium”, short for “nobilium” meaning “noble”, but this record refers to the Godparents as “Gnosus” and “Gnosa”, which is short for “generosus / generosa”, also meaning “noble”. I am uncertain of the difference in meaning between these two words, but the distinction is clearly made in many records.

…it Pours!

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

On October 30 I wrote a post entitled “When it Rains…” where I described some new information Adam Pszczolkowski sent me about my Chodkowski ancestors.

At about the same time, my newly-discovered cousin Christa sent me a wealth of information about our Milewski ancestors, and in particular she sent me the ancestry of my 3rd great grandmother, Karolina Milewska:

Karolina Milewska was the daughter of Wojciech Milewski and Anna Burska, granddaughter of Baltazar Milewski and Marianna Nalecz, great granddaughter of Gregorz Milewski and Anna Grochowska, second great granddaughter of Jan Milewski and Felicja Rembowska, third great granddaughter of Jakub Milewski and Zofia, and fourth great granddaughter of Wojciech Milewski.

Wojciech Milewski is my 9th great grandfather, born in about 1580.

Yes, when it rains, it pours!

When it Rains…

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Just before I left California for the East Coast, I received several messages from Adam Pszczolkowski, one of the leading genealogists in Poland.

Adam provided me with additional information about my Chodkowski (Chotkowski) ancestors, a noble family about which he has researched and written.

In short, Adam told me about the ancestry of my fourth great grandmother, Cecylia Chodkowska:

Cecylia Chodkowska was the daughter of Andrzej and Marianna Mossakowska, granddaughter of Tomasz and Franciszka Czarzasta, great granddaughter of Marcin, second great-granddaughter of Wawrzyniec, third great-granddaughter of Andrzej called Litwinek, fourth great-granddaughter of Mikołaj, and fifth great-granddaughter of Jan called Baran de Chodkowo-Zalogi.

Source: Adam A. Pszczolkowski “Gniazdo i krze. Rodowody Chodkowskich” Chodkowo Wielkie, 2005.

Furthermore, he supplied me with the email address of one of his colleagues in Poland who is my cousin through my Niedziałkowski ancestors, and he contacted another colleague in the United States who is also my cousin through my Milewski ancestors.

I’m a bit overwhelmed with all this new information and probably won’t have a chance to digest it all until I return to San Francisco!

Niedziałkowski Marriages in Pałuki 1694-1808

Monday, October 6th, 2008

The most distant Niedziałkowski relatives that I’ve discovered lived in Klonowo, a village belonging to the Pałuki parish in Poland.

In an effort to find other Niedziałkowski relatives, I searched the marriage index for the Pałuki parish from 1694-1808 and discovered quite a number of Niedziałkowskis listed.

  • 02 Feb 1701 - Szymon Niedziałkowski & Agnieszka Kaumińska - #11
  • 25 Feb 1710 - Mateusz Długołęki & Jadwiga Niedziałkowska - #21
  • 18 Feb 1743 - Mikołaj Bartold & Franciszka Niedziałkowska - #87
  • 20 Feb 1746 - Ignacy Niedziałkowski & Zofia Kamieńska - #90
  • 22 Nov 1751 - Józef Obidzieński & Katarzyna Niedziałkowska - #12
  • 24 Jan 1758 - Stefan Milewski & Teresa Niedziałkowska - #28
  • 30 Jul 1759 - Stanisław Bartold & Agnieszka Niedziałkowska - #33
  • 20 Feb 1764 - Jakób Niedziałkowski & Ewa Ostowska - #44
  • 20 Jul 1766 - Jakób Niedziałkowski & Agnieszka Długołęcka - #51
  • 02 Jan 1768 - Walenty Milewski & Maryanna Niedziałkowska - #58
  • 14 Jan 1768 - Filip Małoszewski & Maryann Niedziałkowska - #58
  • 12 Feb 1781 - Józef Niedziałkowski & Maryanna Kolakowska - #87
  • 24 Jan 1785 - Wojciech Roman & Wiktorya Niedziałkowska - #10-11
  • 19 Jan 1788 - Piotr Gozdzieński & Antonina Niedziałkowska - #14
  • 30 Jun 1789 - Jan Niedziałkowski & Petronella Kuwacka - #17
  • 05 Jul 1791 - Stanisław Gierwatowski & Mary Niedziałkowska - #20
  • 09 Jul 1792 - Maciej Długołęki & Maryana Niedziałkowska - #22
  • 11 Feb 1793 - Józef Morawski & Anna Niedziałkowska - #23
  • 19 Jan 1800 - Wawrzeniec Kerzkowski & Julianna Niedziałkowska - #36

Over the course of 103 years, 19 Niedziałkowskis were married in Pałuki.

Of these, I know that Ignacy Niedziałkowski is my 5th great grandfather and Katarzyna Niedziałkowska is my 5th great grandaunt. As for the rest, I suspect they may all be related, but I don’t know how. Further research may help uncover these relationships.

These records were found in “Alfabetyczny Summaryusz Zaślubionych od roku 1694-1808 Parafii Pałukiej. [Alphabetical Summary of Marriages from the year 1694-1808 of the Pałuki Parish.]”, item 10; filmed as Księgi metrykalne, 1658-1836; FHL INTL microfilm 1,496,613.

The Krasne Parish Indexing Project

Monday, August 25th, 2008

Despite my best intentions not to get involved in any new projects, I’ve to index the records of the parish of St. John the Baptist in Krasne, Poland.

I began these efforts after reading about the Złotów parish records indexing project that Al of the Polish-American Genealogy Research blog started.

As another impetus, I discovered that many of the early Krasne parish records do not include the indexes usually included at the end of each year’s records, forcing me to examine each record individually.

The earliest records for Krasne that have been microfilmed by the Family History Library are the parish record books from 1657. Beginning in 1808, the microfilmed records are of the civil transcripts.

On Saturday, I began to index the birth/baptismal records from 1808. I completed the index for the first 45 records. The surnames represented in these records are Boiarski, Chełchowski, Chotkowski, Gołąb, Intczak, Jakiebowski, Jakubiak, Jędrasik, Jegliński, Kaoprzak, Kieszak, Łyszkowski, Maculak, Malinowski, Mieszkowski, Milewski, Mosakowski, Mularczyk, Niedziałkowski, Obicziński, Piotrak, Pukrowski, Smurlika, Sobiesiak, Stępnowski, Suski, Szarlik, Trzaska, Wudziński, Zaleski, Zarodkiewicz, Zbikowski, and Zbyszyński.

These births occurred in the villages of Kozino, Krasne, Milewo Brzegędy, Milewo Gawary, Milewo Saweyki, Mosaki Godacze, Mosaki Rukle, Mosaki Stara wieś, Slasy Łozyno, Szczuki, Zalesie, Zbiki Antosy, Zbiki Filipy, Zbiki Gawronki, Zbiki Pańskie, and Zbiki Starki.

The surnames I know are in my own family history include Chotkowski, Milewski, and Niedziałkowski. The villages in which my ancestors resided include Mosaki Godacze, Mosaki Rukle, and Mosaki Stara wieś.

Initially, I’ve decided to include the following information in the index:  Surname, Given Name, Father’s First Name, Father’s Age, Mother’s Maiden Name, Mother’s First Name, Mother’s Age, Date of Birth, Place of Birth, House Number, Date of Baptism, Parish, FHL Film Number, Item Number, and Page.

I’m not including Occupations, Names of Godparents, Name of Priest, Information About Witnesses, or other information in the records.

I expect to finish the index for births/baptisms in 1808 this week.

Thanks, Al, for the inspiration to start this project!
