Among the records from the Piotrawin parish that I found at the Family History Center yesterday was the birth and baptismal record for Wawrzyniec Markiewicz, born a few years before Stanisław and Antoni.

When I originally translated the baptismal records for Stanisław and Antoni Markiewicz, I transliterated the mother’s surname as Piontkowa. However, the names in these documents should be translated into the same sounds in Polish, not necessarily the same letters. The correct Polish translation of Franciszka’s surname is Piątkowa, and Piątkowa is the feminine version of the surname Piątek.
I received an email from […]

After finding the Birth and Baptismal Record for Stanisław Markiewicz, I searched for the records of other children born of the same parents. I found one fairly quickly - Antoni Markiewicz.

Several weeks ago, I reported on the immigration and naturalization of Stanisław Markiewicz, the grandfather of my cousin’s cousin. To put this another way, Stanisław’s daughter Bernice married Edward Skowronski. Edward Skowronski was the brother-in-law of two of my uncles: Joseph Danko and Michael Danko.
In the immigration and naturalization records, I learned that Stanisław was […]

City Directories are useful sources of genealogical information on names, addresses, occupations, and marital relationships. During the late 19th century and most of the 20th century, city directories were published in most major cities of the United States and they provide valuable information on the adults living in those cities. While minor children are not listed […]

Kazimierz Dolny is a Polish village on the Vistula River and is located about 10 miles northeast of Braciejowice. Since I’ve never been to Braciejowice, the ancestral village of the Markiewicz family, I can’t show any photographs of Braciejowice. I did, however, travel to Kazimierz Dolny with two friends in the fall of 2000. I’m not sure […]

Braciejowice, the ancestral village of the Markiewicz family is located in eastern Poland in Gmina Łaziska, Powiat Ziemski Opolski, Wojewódstwo Lubelskie. In a previous post, I translated the entries for Braciejowice from the Słownik Geograficny which described the place as a village and grange (a grange is a large farmstead associated with a manor) between […]

In 1930, Stanislaw Markiewicz was still living in Worcester, Massachusetts, but by this time was using the name Stanley Markiewicz. In addition, all his children were listed with Anglicized names, as opposed to the Polish names used in the 1920 Census.
