No 13  [Mosaki]-Rukle and Łyszkowo
This happened in Krasne on the fourteenth / twenty sixth day of July in the year one-thousand eight-hundred fifty-seven at the hour of five in the afternoon. We make it known that in the presence of witnesses Felicjan Mieszkowski, twenty five years of age, and Felix Milewski, twenty-two years of age, part owners {of the village] residing in [Mosaki]-Rukle, a religious marriage was contracted today between Kacper Chodkowski, a widower after the death of his wife Marianna on the twenty-seventh of May of this same year, born and residing in [Mosaki]-Rukle on inherited land of the deceased Jan and Marianna née Obidzińska Chodkowski, having completed twenty-one years of age, on the one side, and the young woman Alexandra Milewska, born in Łyszkowo and residing with her mother, [daughter] of the married couple, the deceased Bartłomiej and the still-living Ewa Milewski, having completed twenty years of age, on the second side. This wedding was preceded by three readings of the banns on the twenty-third / thirtieth of June, the fifth / twelfth day of July, and the seventh / nineteenth day of July of this same year in the parish of Krasne. No impediment to the marriage arose, as well as by the oral consent of the mother of the newlywed woman present for this record of marriage. The newlyweds stated that a premarital agreement had been made by Felix Cybulski, Notary of the Przasnysz Powiat on the second / fourteenth day of July of this same year. This document was read aloud to the declarants of both sides and witnesses who stated that they do not know how to write, and was signed by Us.

The dates of the banns in this record were written in a very confusing manner. However, the use of a calendar for the year 1857 makes clear that the Julian dates were 23 Jun, 30 Jun, and 07 Jul, and the corresponding Gregorian dates were 05 Jul, 12 Jul, and 19 July.

Tłucznice Karniewo, a village and grange [a large manorial farmstead] in the Maków Powiat, Karniewo Gmina and Parish. The grange has 500 morgs [in the Russian partition 1 morg = 1.388 acres], the village has 29 settlers and 87 morgs. It goes into the storehouse of the property of Karniewo. A few nobles live there. In the year 1827 there were 11 homes and 100 residents.

The maps of the Third Military Mapping Survey of Austria-Hungary and the entries in the Słownik Geograficzny were prepared at about the same time and make a good pair for studying places in and around the Congress Kingdom of Poland at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, a time period when the Eastern European ancestors of present-day Americans left their homelands for the United States.

This happened in the village of Podoś on the sixth day of August in the year one-thousand eight-hundred twenty-six at the hour of five in the afternoon. We make it known that in the presence of witnesses the well-born Piotr Łyszkowski, owner of his part [of the village] and residing in Konarzewo Wielki in the parish of Gołymin, forty-one years of age and uncle of the groom, and Piotr Chodkowski, full brother of the bride, owner of his part in Chodkowo Załogi, twenty-nine years of age, on this day a religious marriage was contracted between the well-born Walerian Chmieliński, a twenty-nine year old bachelor in Konarzewo Wielki in the parish of Gołymin, Przasnysz Obwód, residing together with his father on inherited land, born and residing there on his place, [son of] the married couple, the well-born Florian Chmieliński and the deceased Julianna née Łyszkowska, residing as stated above; and Antonina Chodkowska, a twenty-two year old young woman residing with her mother in Chodkowo Załogi and born in that place of the married couple, the deceased well-born Michał Chodkowski and the living Marianna née Milewska, residing as stated above in Załogi on their inherited parts [of the village]. This wedding was preceded by three readings of the banns on the sixteenth, twenty-third, and thirtieth days of July of this same year in the parishes of Podoś and Gołymin; also with the oral consent of the mothers of the newlyweds. No impediment to the marriage was discovered. The newlyweds stated that there was a premarital agreement between them drawn up on the thirteenth day of July of this same year by Antoni Niski in the Obwód Notary Office in Przasnysz. This document was read aloud to the declarants and witnesses and was signed by Us and Walerian Chmieliński. The other people named in the document do not know how to write.

Adam Chodkowski was my 2nd cousin, 4X removed.

The two witnesses, Franciszek Niedziałkowski and Walenty Niedziałkowski are also probably related to me because I know I had Niedziałkowski ancestors living in Mosaki Rukle in this same time period. I do not, however, have these two people in my database. I’ll have to search further to learn who these two men were.

There appeared Błażej Chodkowski residing in the village of [Mosaki] Rukle, owner of a part [of the village], thirty-one years of age, accompanied by Leon Chodkowski, twenty-seven years of age, /a/ together with Franciszek Niedziałkowski, twenty-seven years of age, both owners of a part [of the village] and residing in the village of Mosaki Rulke, and he showed Us a child of the female sex born in the village of [Mosaki] Rukle yesterday at the hour of three in the afternoon of his wife Agnieszka née Łyszkowska, twenty-one years of age. To this child at Holy Baptism performed on this day was given the name Julianna, and her Godparents were the afore-mentioned Leon Chodkowski and Konstancja his wife. The priest made an error in writing the record. He struck out the erroneous words and indicated his correction with the symbol /a/. In the margin he simply verified that he crossed out the words at the time the record was orignally written. In this way, the priest ensured that someone viewing the record in the future would not need to be concerned that the record was altered after the fact. The words he crossed out were “maiących obydwu”, meaning “of age, both”.
