Steve,
What a wonderful memory you have. I laughed all the way thru.
I don't remember alot of my childhood, but a library wasn't in the cards because I grew up on a farm a couple of miles from town. I do remember one thing though my first experience with the librarian wasn't quite has nice and the person that instilled my love for books was my grandmother. Great job.

I very much enjoyed your description of the day you received your first library card and your tribute to the children's librarian. My first public library position was in the children's department and I loved sigining children up to be library members.

This story warms my librarian's heart!! I love watching the kids come into the library and how eager they are to get down to business.

I, too, remember going to the library in my little Texas panhandle town to get my first library card. We could only check out 2 books at at time, and I think the fine was also 2 cents. However, since I'd take those two books home, read them that night, and return them the next day, I didn't have too many fines.

But Mrs. Shanks and Mrs. Jackson were probably cut from the same mold as Mrs. Katzman. Bless 'em!

I don't know what I loved more - libraries or librarians. We didn't have tv at our house so we did a lot of reading - and spent lots of time in libraries. I still enjoy wandering the shelves looking for something to catch my interest.

Thanks, Dru, Becky, and Donna!

I thought about skipping the Carnival of Genealogy on A Tribute to Women because I was having trouble coming up with an idea. As it turned out, this story was really very easy to write once I thought of Mrs. Katzman. Children's librarians are, indeed, unsung heroes.

I wish I still had my first library card, but I don't. I'd love to get a copy of the original application with the forged signature, too! The reason I remember the card number is because I used it so much when I was young.

Steve,

This was very well written - I loved it! I could "see" the whole story take place. What a nice tribute to a special lady. (And what a good memory you have...I also loved to read and learned at at early age, but I'll be darned if I can remember with this kind of detail!)

What a nice and touching tribute. I wonder if Mrs. Katzman ever knew of the influence she had on you and (probably) other children? She is one of the many "unsung heroes" of everyday life.

I assume you still have that card since you know the number. Is that true?

Steve, this is a well written story of a childhood memory. You included great detail and I could envision everyone in the library.
