Baptism:- C. E. Saxton
Charles Edward, son of George Saxton of the Parish of St. Armand West in the county of Missisquoi and province of Quebec and of Ada May Gibson his wife, was born on the fifth day of March Eighteen hundred and eighty-one and was baptized on the twenty-first day of March Eighteen hundred and eighty-one in the presence of the subscribing witnesses

[Signed] J.E Richardson
M.M.Witnesses:- [Signed] Adie May Saxton [Signed] Thomas Hightman
Since Thomas Clark Saxton was baptized only 16 days after birth, the date of birth provided in this record is probably fairly accurate.
In the 1851 and 1861 Canadian Census Records, Ada May’s grandparents were listed as Methodist. In the 1861 Canadian Census Records, Ada May, her parents, her brother Willard, and her sisters Hannah and Emily are listed as having no religion.
The family of George and Ada May Saxton later joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. What was the religion of George Saxton before he emigrated from England? When did the family join the LDS Church?

Though it does not refer to George’s religion prior to joining the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, I did locate a possible sister named Margaret on a tree that was posted on Ancestry.com. Perhaps research into this relationship could provide a clue that would provide you with his prior religion. She married a Mr. George Fell of Lincolnshire. Their marriage record may be of assistance.

Hi Cindy,
Thanks for the idea. I haven’t looked into English records much. I’ll have to study up on this area. I have three elective courses left in my program at the National Institute for Genealogical Studies. Perhaps I should take some courses on English records. I did find the marriage of Margaret Saxton and George Fell on http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ , but FreeBMD only provides an image of the index, not the actual record.
Today, I managed to find George Saxton on the 1861 Census of England, enumerated with his parents Thomas and Ann Saxton, and with his brothers Thomas and Simeon, so that’s a start.
You started me looking into the Census Records for this family and now you’ve convinced me to look into the English Marriage Records!

I can relate….one clue leads to another! I have had much success finding families religion by looking at the female children. Since the wedding is typically held at the church of the bride’s parents it could lead you to the correct denomination. Happy hunting!
