  1. Hi Steve!

There are so many interesting and unusual forenames and surnames in your family that I have not seen and which are so beautiful, at least when I try to sound them out. Zenaide is certainly one of them. Are you aware of any book or online resource that is a dictionary of the origin and/or meaning of these names?

    George

  2. Hi George,

The names on this monument are French, since these are my Godmother’s parents who were French Canadian. There is an online resource for French given names at http://www.e-prenoms.com/ that provides information on the origins of French given names.

There is a similar site for Polish given names at http://kartki.onet.pl/imiona.html , and there is also a book available: Hoffman, William F., and George W. Helon. 1998. First names of the Polish commonwealth: origins & meanings. Chicago: Polish Genealogical Society of America.

I’m not aware of any resource for the meanings of French surnames, but there is a great resource for the meanings of Polish surnames: Hoffman, William F. 1998. Polish surnames: origins and meanings, 2nd ed. Chicago: Polish Genealogical Society of America.
